Catherine Horwood – Authorized biographer of Beth Chatto
Renowned author and broadcaster Catherine Horwood will talk about her experiences when researching and writing about gardening history, one of her favourite subjects. In particular she will give us an insight into her latest work, BETH CHATTO A Life with plants, which was published in September 2019. The biography includes extracts from Beth’s notebooks and diaries bringing her own distinctive and much-loved voice into the book.
‘…a triumph, beautifully crafted by an author who has thoroughly researched and understood her subject… There is so much here to keep the reader gripped.’ Fergus Garrett, Gardens Illustrated, October 2019
Copies will be available for purchase after the talk, signed by the author, so if you weren’t lucky enough to receive this book for Christmas make sure that you don’t miss out on Saturday!
With seasonal cheer, we will be welcoming back Helen Yemm, author of Gardening in Pyjamas, Telegraph columnist and above all, passionate gardener, to give us an update on My ‘New’ Smaller Garden – Five Years On’. Helen is always very happy to answer audience questions so come prepared!
Our Herts HPS Christmas Party follows the talk. This is the occasion when the committee provides drinks and serves food brought by members and party guests. Please bring a contribution of finger food to share. It can be savoury or sweet but must be ready to eat, and preferably on a disposable plate. If you bring your own plate or container, it needs to be clearly marked with your name or returned (empty!) to your car before the meeting to avoid confusion when clearing up.
Please note that there will be no plant sale this month, and that volunteer help would be very much appreciated to help put away the chairs and tables at the end of the meeting.
