Hello and welcome to the HHPS Autumn newsletter. This is my first time editing the magazine and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the previous editor Irene Cowan for all her hard work and wish her well in her new position as Chairman (elect).
By way of introduction, I used to be a professional gardener and qualified in garden design when I developed back problems in the 1990s. I was originally an art student, which gave me a strong appreciation of colour and form and that, coupled with my gardening experience, made design a natural choice. However, I’ve always preferred getting my hands dirty, and nowadays I don’t do much design work but spent most of my time in my own garden, in Welwyn Garden City, which I open for the NGS. My other hobby is lino-cut print making, but with the demands of the garden that’s largely a winter occupation.
My husband, Bill Hodgson, is the new HHPS Website Manager and a very patient carrier of heavy compost.
I hope the new-look Newsletter meets with members’ approval. Any feedback would be gratefully received. It’s a bumper issue this time, as so much has been going on over the summer, and we’re introducing some colour to the magazine for the first time, too. Don’t miss Madeleine McCormack’s behind-the-scenes article on the very successful Summer Gardens Day, and the exciting new events programme – we have some first-rate speakers lined up for the new season, including seed guru Derry Watkins and the inimitable Fergus Garrett.
